Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara has delivered a public warning regarding fake advertisements circulating on certain social media platforms that misleadingly feature him endorsing well-known brands.

In a statement posted online, the former batter explained that he has no connection with either firm and denounced the videos as AI-generated fakes aimed at fooling the public.

“Please disregard any adverts, you may have seen of me in collaboration with Daraz/Samsung. I have no affiliation with the above brands and the videos are clearly AI-generated,” the 47-year-old southpaw stated.

The scam appears to use advanced artificial intelligence tools to create convincing deep fake videos and images, falsely showing celebrities promoting products or investment schemes. These strategies are increasingly being used by online impostors to exploit public trust.

In the meantime, cyber security experts impulse the public to remain watchful about such scams, highlighting a few key safety tips.

They are to always verify promotions or endorsements through official brand pages or verified social media accounts, be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, particularly if they involve personal financial details and inform any suspicious ads or content to the relevant platform to help prevent further spread.

Social media users have been urged to think disapprovingly before attractive with advertisements, especially those involving financial investments or endorsements by well-known figures or celebrities.

Sangakkara’s alert adds to a growing list of international cases where AI-generated content has been misused for scams, raising concerns about digital security and online distortion.
