Angelo Mathews, one of Sri Lanka’s most ornamented cricketers, has voiced obstruction over the diminishing number of Test matches for his country, calling it a key reason behind his retirement.

Speaking in the future of his farewell Test against Bangladesh in Galle, Mathews urged authorities to provide more red-ball chances for teams outside the cricketing elite.

He worried the importance of Test cricket for the sport’s truthfulness, highlighting that Sri Lanka, despite its rich cricketing history, will play only 4 Tests in 2025.

Mathews criticised the growing inequity in the Test calendar, pointing out that nations like India, England, and Australia play over 15 Tests annually, while Sri Lanka have the fewest.

He decided by expressing hope that future players would not have to wait a year for red-ball chances, as he chose to step aside early to offer his replacement a rare debut opportunity.
