On-going their dominance in athletics, defending champions Hindu National College, Matale, with a tally of 132 points, excelled to clinch the boys overall title for the third consecutive year at the Matale zonal athletic meet 2024 which concluded last week at Bernard Aluvihare stadium in Matale.

St. Thomas’ College, Matale ended second with 120 points, followed by Weera Parakrama MV. Yatawatta in third place with 42 points.

The four-day track and field meet lead by the sports education unit of Matale education zone saw over 2000 athletes (boys and girls) on behalf of schools in the four divisions Matale, Yatawatta, Rattota, and Ukuwela taking part.

Hindu College athletes showed their supremacy in the boys Under-16, Under-20 segments and in the relays.

Y. Yadursan, who won the 100 m, 200 m, and 400 m events, returning best timing of 25.4 sec in the 200 m, was named the best athlete in the boys Under-16 category. 

S. Thudiharshidan of Hindu College was placed first in the Under-20 boys 800 m, 1500 m, and 5000 m events.

Matale Zonal Director of Education Nayomi Hettiarachchi graced the presentation ceremony as the chief guest with Assistant Director of Education – School Development Madhavi Wijesinghe as the guest of honour.
