A match winning knock of 84 inclusive of five boundaries and a six by Krishan Sanjula paved the way for SSC to record an easy 71 run win over Sebastianites C&AC in the final of the Major Club limited over cricket tournament played at the SSC ground.
This was SSC’s second major title as they emerged Major League three day joint champions with Police SC a fortnight ago.
However SSC underwent some anxious moments after skipper Avishka Fernando won the toss and elected to take first lease of the wicket. They lost two early wickets with the score on 46 before Sanjula along with Shevon Daniel rescued them with a 46 runs stand for the third wicket.
But they fell back again as they lost another three quick wickets for the addition of 29 runs as the middle order batting failed and from a healthy position of 94 for 3 they slid to 121 for 6 in the 36th over. It was Sanjula who came to the side’s rescue again as he along with Chamindu Wickramasinghe put on a valuable 68 runs for the seventh wicket to help SSC end their innings with a respectable score of 201.
Sebastianites C&AC in their run chase fell into deep trouble with four of their top order batsmen being sent back to the pavilion with the score on 39 in the 15th over. They were unable to make any headway despite two brief stands of 31 runs between skipper Promod Maduwantha and Thevindu Senaratne for the seventh wicket and 34 runs for the ninth wicket between Chamikara Edirisinghe and Isitha Wijesundara as they were able to muster a score of only 130 runs.
