Badminton World Federation (BWF) international umpire Lakpriya Edirisinghe has been selected to perform official duties at the China Open Badminton Tournament, to be held from September 17 to 22 in Changzhou, China.

This is a significant opportunity for Edirisinghe as the China Open is the utmost level tournament (super 1000) on the BWF calendar and offers prize money of US $2 million for the winners. The top 32 shuttlers in the Badminton world are qualified to play in this tournament, and the world’s number one ranked players in all events have already confirmed their participation in this significant event.

Lakpriya Edirisinghe, who used to play at the national level, has perform official duties in various world tournaments, such as the Commonwealth Games, Thomas and Uber Cup tournaments, Special Olympics, Youth Olympics, Asian tournaments, and South Asian tournaments. Transitioning to umpiring in 1996 after his Badminton career, he reached the highest level of becoming a BWF international umpire in 2012. His selection to officiate at the China Open provides valuable exposure as an International Badminton Umpire.

Lakpriya has formerly officiated at the Paralympics in Tokyo in 2022 and was the first Sri Lankan umpire to officiate at that prestigious tournament. He has officiated in more than 160 International tournaments and has easily become one of the most experienced umpires in Sri Lanka.
