The 10-member Sri Lanka Junior Sailing Team departed recently to compete in the (International Optimist Dinghy Association) IODA Asian and Oceanian Sailing Championship in Hong Kong, which runs from December 29 to January 5.

The team includes talented young sailors Haren Wickramatillake and Akaine Ubayasiri from S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia; Kevaan de Costa, Minuga Hettigamage, A. Luqmaan Aneeq, Binal Perera, and Randira Hangarangoda from Royal College, Colombo; Laila Hazari from Methodist College, Colombo; and Sohanya de Mel and McKaella Karunaratne from Ladies’ College, Colombo.

The sailors, all under 15 years of age, will be guided by National Coach, Asian Games bronze medalist Krishan Janaka. Team Manager V Satsorupan and Lady Chaperon Kalpani de Mel will accompany the group.

This year’s championship, featuring 133 competitors from 20 countries, is planned to be an intense eight-day event showcasing the region’s best junior sailors.
