The Isipathana College under 16 Hockey Team, led by Mandiv Ranasinghe, showcased their talents as one of the best teams at the Boys Under 16 All-Island Hockey tournament. But they missed a golden opportunity to enter the final of the Cup Championship, losing to St. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa, in a thrilling semi-final encounter on penalty strokes. The championship was organised and accompanied by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association, under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, played in Matale recently.
The Under 16 Hockey Team made it to the best four at this tournament after approximately 15 years. From the start of their hockey careers, these lads were coached by Praveen Chanaka, a well-known hockey player produced by Isipathana College. The coaching stint this year was handed over to Vishwa Udayanga, with Kasun Rajitha appointed to assist him. The Isipathana College Under 16 Hockey Team showcased their talents to pay a compliment to their Master Praveen Chanka who guided them to come up to this standard.
Principal Dharshana Udawattege encouraged the team and MIC Nayana Padmakumari supported the boys.In their league matches played, they beat Janadhipathi Vidyalaya Maharagama on penalty strokes and Vijaya College Matale also on penalty strokes. In qualifying to the pre quarter final, they beat Richmond College Galle by one goal to nil, scored by A.M. Mohamed Saad.
In qualifying to the quarter final, the team tired Dharmadutha College Badulla on penalty strokes. In qualifying to the semi-final, the team lost to St. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa on penalty strokes. Against Wijapala NS Matale, the match was called off due to bad light.
