President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed ex-Sports Minister Harin Fernando as a Presidential Advisor on Sports, Lands and Tourism, as per the power vested in him under Article 41 (1) of the Constitution, the PMD announced yesterday (19).
Fernando was required to step down from his ministerial portfolio as the Supreme Court (SC) determined on 9 August, that the decision taken by the SJB to oust him from the party membership a year ago was legal.
The Apex Court had issued this verdict while dismissing a FR petition filed by Fernando, who prayed for an order declaring that the SJBs decision to suspend his party membership was unlawful.
Accordingly, the former minister put up disqualified from functioning as a lawmaker in the current Government with effect from 9 August, as per the SC ruling.
