Sri Lanka Air Force’s Chamara Nuwan Dharmawardena won a gold medal at the Thailand International Judo Championship, organized by the Judo Association of Thailand, finished at the Gymnasium of Thailand National Sports University in Chonburi.

Sri Lanka ended with a overall of eight medals, including four silver and three bronze. Sergeant Dharmawardena, the undisputed national champion, competed in the 73kg weight class to clinch the gold. Corporal Abeysinghe of Air Force secured a silver medal in the 100kg category.

In the women’s 45kg weight class, Lance Corporal Herath HMDA of the Sri Lanka Army also got a silver medal. The men’s competition saw Corporal Premarathna WAWP and Marco MAM from the Sri Lanka Army each take home silver in the 60kg and 90kg categories, respectively. The Sri Lankan team also celebrated bronze medal wins from Jayasundara DPCL of the Sri Lanka Army in the 55kg weight class, Pahankumbura KMSLB of the Army in the 66kg class, and Sripali Kumarasighe of the Sri Lanka Navy in the 70kg women’s category.

The two-day championship featured Cadets, seniors, and Kata competitions across eight age groups for both men and women. All medallists and athletes finishing in the top five received diplomas for their achievements.

The Sri Lankan team, entailing of 14 judokas (11 men and 3 women), competed against athletes from 16 other nations, including host Thailand, Korea, Japan, France, China, Malaysia, and Singapore.
