It is reported that the International Cricket Council has taken steps to impose several new rules for the matches. Accordingly, the ICC has informed the member countries that these new rules will be effective for Test matches from June and for white-ball matches from July. Currently, the law related to the two new balls used for an innings from the beginning of one-day matches has been revised.
According to the new law, only two balls are to be used from each end from the beginning of an innings until the completion of 34 overs. Only one ball is to be used from each end from the beginning of the 35th over until the completion of the innings. Accordingly, one ball used up to 34 overs will be removed. The bowling team will decide which ball will be used for the last 16 overs. The ICC is reported to have brought in this rule with the aim of giving bowlers more opportunities to bowl ‘reverse swing’.
Meanwhile, the rules related to the method of replacing a player in the team due to a concussion have also been amended.
Accordingly, according to the new ‘concussion rules’, both teams must provide the names of 5 additional players to the match referee before the start of a match. That is, one wicketkeeper, one batsman, one fast bowler, one spinner and one all-rounder. If a player is substituted due to a concussion, a suitable player (like-for-like) will be selected from among those additional players and the replacement will be made.
The new rules will not be valid for the final match of the World Test Championship starting on June 11. The new rules will come into effect from the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh Test series starting in Galle on June 17. The new rules for limited-overs matches will also come into effect from the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh ODI and T20 series in July.
