Aminul Islam has been appointed as the new chairman of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. This is to fill the vacancy left by the removal of Farooq Ahmed, who had been holding the post until now. Farooq Ahmed lost his chairmanship after the country’s Sports Ministry decided to remove him from his position as a representative on the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s board of directors. The ministry had taken this step after a no-confidence motion against the chairman, signed by 8 directors of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, was submitted to the Bangladesh Sports Ministry. The Sports Ministry had nominated two representatives to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, one of whom was Farooq Ahmed. He was appointed as a representative on August 21, and he was also appointed as the chairman on the same day. However, his tenure was limited to only about 9 months.
Farooq was accused of ruling as an autocratic leader and violating the constitution. Article 14-B of the Bangladesh Cricket Board constitution states that the approval of the board is required for decisions regarding the appointment or dismissal of coaches. However, in such a context, Farooq had dismissed former coach Chandika Hathurusingha in October last year without informing the board. He has also been accused of various charges related to the Bangladesh Premier League. The new chairman, Aminul Islam, who was appointed at a meeting of the Bangladesh Cricket Board held in Dhaka, is a former player and captain of the Bangladesh team. He also led the Bangladesh team in the 1999 World Cup. He was also the one who scored the first Test century for Bangladesh.
