Asia Rugby’s (AR) Executive Committee, which recently call together virtually for an ad hoc meeting, has appointed former Sri Lanka star Asanga Seneviratne and Vela Tan as Independent Officers.
Seneviratne, 59, and well-known old Thomian, excelled as a fullback and first five for both his school and CR & FC before representing his country in both the 15-a-side and Sevens formats in the 1980s and ’90s.
After retiring from the sport, he turn into rugby administration and served as both a former head of selectors and national coach.
He was also a one-time President of the then Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), which is now known as Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR).
Seneviratne also stick up out as a cricketer for S. Thomas’ and subsequently the Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) as an aggressive left-handed middle-order batter in the domestic first-class circuit, playing against the likes of Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda de Silva, to name a few.
On the other hand, he unfortunately struggled to break into the national fold due to the fierce competition at the time and continued to contribute to both sports from the administrative side instead.
The AR Nominations Committee will be led by Vela Tan, who will be support the committees’ chairpersons in refining and developing the appropriate terms and identifying competent committee deputies and members. This will be done with an in-depth consideration to maintaining fair representation of the continent’s five sub-regions and improving the 32% female inclusion achieved to-date across all committees.
