The Minipura Battle or the cricket match between Seevali / Aloysius schools has been abandoned for many years. The Save the Minipura Battle group is requesting the principals of the schools and the relevant authorities to restart it. Members of the Seevali-Aloysius Joint Alumni Association emphasized this at a media conference held at the Ratnapura Inn recently. They said that both schools have a long history of cricketing excellence.
The traditional match between Seevali Central College and Aloysius College in Ratnapura was restarted in 1984. This match was again stopped due to an unfortunate incident that occurred in 2002.
Thereafter, attempts by Seevali alumni to restart the match failed due to neglect at various administrative levels. In addition, requests have been made through the Ministry of Education and the Presidential Secretariat.
According to the alumni, the Seevali-Aloysius Grand Match is a heritage of the people of Ratnapura and restarting it will provide sports opportunities to children and produce national level players.
The alumni’s final request is to change the administration’s intentions and take necessary steps to restart the traditional grand match.
