An agreement has been signed between the FIA (International Automobile Federation) and the Government of Rwanda to host a Formula 1 race.
According to international reports, the agreement spans a decade, beginning in 2030.
The event, dubbed the “African Grand Prix,” is planned to take place on a new circuit constructed in Bugesera—located near the new international airport, 25 miles south of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.
This will be the first Formula 1 race held in Africa since 1993. A statement issued by Formula 1 notes that this project is the result of years of collaboration.
The statement further mentions that the circuit—designed by former F1 driver Alex Wurz—is crafted to integrate with the natural landscape, offering spectators unique viewing opportunities while providing a challenging racing experience. F1 organizers believe that this race will provide an opportunity to expand the sport’s reach within Africa—a region that has been relatively less explored compared to Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
It has not yet been definitively decided which time of year would best suit this race within the annual calendar.
