Competing in two significant tournaments, Rasindu Hendahewa, Dumindu Abeywickrama, and Ranithma Liyanage all delivered commendable performances, highlighting Sri Lanka\u2019s growing influence in the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the WONDR by BNI Indonesia International Challenge 2024 in Surabaya, Hendahewa, ranked 200th in the world, advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Thailand\u2019s Ratchaphol Srithong in straight sets (21-9, 21-17) in the first round and edging Malaysia\u2019s Muhammad Naim Ahmad Fairuzly in a tough three-setter (21-8, 18-21, 21-11) in the Round of 32. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though, his campaign ended at the hands of Indonesia\u2019s third seed, Yohanes Saut Marcelllyno, who won 21-10, 21-9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even with the loss, Hendahewa\u2019s progression to the last 16 was a significant achievement for the 22-year-old player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same event, Liyanage had an impressive run in the women\u2019s singles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After an intense comeback victory over Thailand\u2019s Nutnalin Rattanapanuwong (14-21, 21-14, 22-20) in the Round of 32, Liyanage \u2013 ranked 142 – was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Indonesia\u2019s Bilqis Prasista who won 13-21, 18-21. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 17-year-old Liyanage\u2019s efforts received high admiration despite her loss to Prasista, currently ranked 109th in the BWF World Tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the meantime, at the MAXX North Harbour International 2024 in Auckland, New Zealand, Dumindu Abeywickrama, ranked 152nd, delivered a strong showing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 21-year-old cruised through his first two rounds, defeating Nepal\u2019s Jivan Acharya (21-13, 21-9) and overcoming a close contest against Keith Mark Edison (25-23, 21-16). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though, in the Round of 16, Abeywickrama was beaten by Taiwan\u2019s fifth seed, Wang Po-Wei, in a tight three-set matches (16-21, 21-15, 21-16).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The performances by these Sri Lankan shuttlers against higher-ranked players signal the development of Sri Lanka\u2019s badminton programme on the global stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This also highlights the nation\u2019s growing talent pool and potential for future success in international badminton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
