Many fans are discussing the fact that Sri Lanka’s Pavan Rathnayake was not nominated for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Player of the Month award for October.
Given his performance during the triangular series in Pakistan, he could well have been a contender; consequently, Sri Lankan fans are far from pleased that he missed out.
The reality is that several players delivered exceptional performances throughout the cricket matches held in October.
While Pavan was left off the shortlist, the nominees include Arafat Minhas from Pakistan, Shai Hope from the West Indies, and Marco Jansen from South Africa.
Shai Hope, in particular, made a massive impact during his tour of India in October, truly shaking things up. Looking at the month of October, one could highlight Shai Hope’s magnificent, unbeaten 162—which helped chase down a target of 352 in an ODI—as well as his performance in a T20 series, where he recorded two centuries and a half-century across four innings.
Hope’s performance against India was so impressive that it would be hard for anyone to find fault with it; it is no surprise, therefore, that Shai Hope has been nominated for the ‘Player of the Month’ award for October.
Meanwhile, Marco Jansen delivered an outstanding performance—both with the bat and the ball—to help South Africa secure a historic Test series victory.
Throughout the Test series against Australia, whenever the South African side faced pressure, Jansen stepped up to contribute in every way possible—with the bat, the ball, and in the field.
Over the course of the series, Jansen scored 198 runs at an average of 39.6 (including two half-centuries) and claimed 11 wickets. It cannot be argued that his nomination for this award is undeserved.
The only other contender is Arafat Minhas. In reality, the dilemma here lies between Pawan Rathnayake and Arafat Minhas.
Both Minhas and Pawan performed exceptionally well during the recently concluded triangular series in Pakistan. In terms of individual match performances, Pawan Rathnayake was more consistent than Minhas in every game.
However, considering his all-round abilities, his match-defining innings in the final, and the fact that his performance helped Pakistan secure the championship, Arafat Minhas emerged as the Player of the Tournament.
It is precisely for this reason that Pawan Rathnayake’s name was omitted from the list of nominees for the ‘Player of the Month’ for October.
This was not due to any lack of talent on Pawan’s part, but rather a consequence of Sri Lanka’s failure to secure victories. Had Sri Lanka won the triangular series, Pawan would have had an excellent chance—not only of winning the Player of the Tournament award but also of being nominated for the ‘Player of the Month’ for October. However, that opportunity slipped away because the championship was not won.
Shai Hope, Marco Jansen, and Arafat Minhas were all ‘Player of the Series’ winners in the most significant tournaments held during October. Consequently, a dilemma arises when attempting to rank Pavan Rathnayake above a ‘Player of the Series’ recipient.
In truth, Pavan Rathnayake will certainly receive plenty of opportunities in the future.
Ultimately, Pavan Rathnayake missed out on the ‘Player of the Month’ award for October 2026 simply because Sri Lanka failed to win the crucial matches required.
