One of Sri Lanka’s renowned motor racing spectacles, the Walawa Supercross, is set to make its high-octane return on 13 July, following a five-year break.
The forthcoming event is organised by the Southern Motor Sports Club in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) and the Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee.
The 2025 edition marks the 10th time this popular event will happen. The Supercross first began 14 years ago to raise funds for the welfare of disabled war heroes and their families.
Over the years, it has become a key fixture in Sri Lanka’s motor sport calendar, attracting top drivers, riders, and countless fans.
The race will be detained at the Udawalawe gravel track, a scenic venue where spectators can watch the entire race without missing any action.
The car track is 1,300 metres long, while the motorcycle track measures 1,200 metres. Both tracks are 30 metres wide with five thrilling bends.
Over 50,000 spectators are anticipated to witness this year’s edition, and the event will be broadcast live on Channel Eye.
The trial runs took place on Saturday (5) and Sunday (6) for cars and for the first time, cash prizes will be given to winners.
This year’s Supercross will have 12 car races in categories like SLGT, SLH, SLE, SLN, and Diesel, along with nine motorbike events including Motocross and junior events for young riders, and over 200 entries.
To safeguard the safety of all, organisers have introduced stronger spectator barricades, fully enclosed marshal points, and advanced warning systems for both participants and fans.
Southern Motor Sports Club President Nuwan Samarawikrama said the event is not just about racing but also about bringing spectators together and creating chances for young talent.
