The Sri Lanka Air Force won the women’s championship with several national records in the Defence Services Weightlifting Championship
The 13th Defence Services Weightlifting Championship, organized by the Defence Services Sports Council with the aim of developing the skills of the tri-service sportsmen and women, concluded successfully at the Torrington Sports Complex in Colombo.
In this championship, the Sri Lanka Air Force women’s weightlifting team won the overall championship in the women’s weightlifting event of the Defence Services Sports Championship by winning 6 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal, while the Air Force men’s weightlifting team won the men’s division of the Defence Services Sports Championship by winning 3 gold medals, 4 silver medals and a bronze medal.
In this competition, Airman Ruchira Jayasena, representing the Sri Lanka Air Force, set a new Sri Lankan record by lifting 135 kg in the 89 kg weight category and Airwoman Madushika Premaratne set a new Sri Lankan record by lifting 66 kg in the 45 kg weight category. The award for the best female athlete in the women’s category was won by Corporal Hansani Gomes of the Sri Lanka Air Force.
The Chief Guest at the awarding and certificate presentation ceremony of this competition was Commodore Roshan Dissanayake of the Navy, Air Commodore Dinesh Jayaweera, Chairman of the Air Force Weightlifting Squad, along with a group of senior officers and other ranks of the tri-services.
