The Under-19 National Youth League, the country’s premier cricket tournament that selects talented players for the Sri Lankan national team to represent it in the upcoming Under-19 World Cup, is being held in Anuradhapura these days. It is noteworthy that Wimat Dinsara, who is the captain of the Sri Lanka Under-19 National Team, will be leading the Colombo Southern team in this tournament, which will be held with the participation of 5 provincial teams. Wimat led the Sri Lanka Youth Team in the tournament against Bangladesh that ended in Colombo.
Wimat first started playing cricket while studying as a 6th year student at St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa. In the Under-13 tournament, the 100 he scored against Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya, as vice-captain of St. Sebastian’s, was a big sign that he would be a talented batsman in the future. In the Under-15 tournament, the 208 he scored against S. D. S. Jayasinghe College, Dehiwala was a captain’s innings. The Under-17 cricket phase was very important for him as he was able to lead St. Sebastian’s team to the semi-finals. That year, Wimat Dinsara managed to score 100 runs against Ananda Shrastralaya. Due to these skills of Dinsara, the opportunity arose to join the Under-19 team of St. Sebastian’s, Moratuwa, at the age of 16. In his first year, he played 12 matches and scored 829 runs with 9 half-centuries. Wimat Dinsara won awards after awards in the Moratu Gold Battle between St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa and Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa in 2023, playing unbeaten in the Moratu Gold Battle, the ODI match and the T20 match.
