Sri Lanka Squash (SLS) Junior Open, powered by Citizens Development Business Finance (CDB) and conducted by Sri Lanka Squash was worked off at Ratmalana Air Force Squash Complex from 19th to 24th November as a National Ranking Squash tournament.
Citizens Development Business Finance (CDB), a great promoter of Sri Lanka Squash came forward for the 1st time to sponsor the tournament as a testimony to its commitment to uplift the game of squash in the country. The tournament featured over 300 junior players competing in 16 junior events under both boys and girls categories.
Most importantly this tournament was conducted as a Round robin tournament enabling each player with an opportunity to play at least 3 to 4 matches. This was also the 2nd tournament which was held in the this format this year and it was indeed a marathon tournament which saw more than 600 matches being played over 6 days providing a lot of opportunities to the upcoming junior Squash players in Sri Lanka.
Matheesha Wijeseakra from Royal College and Nethmi Wickramasinghe from Ladies College emerged champions in the u-19 category where Matheesha Wijeseakra beat Rilwan Mohomad from S. Josephs’ College in straight sets while Nethmi Wickramasinghe was stretched for a five setter by Ifra Booso from St Paul’s School- Milagiriya.
Manuth Dassanayake from Gateway College and Thedara Liyanage from Sirimavo Balika Vidyalaya went on to win the Boys and Girls U-17 titles overcoming Ranuka Pilapitiya from Royal College and Methuki Samaranayake from Devi Balika Vidyalaya respectively.
Sithumli Mendis from Gateway College beat Chanumi Thebuwana from Gateway College to win the Girls U-15 title while Akane Konara from S. Thomas College- Mount Lavinia beat Disas Subasinghe from D S Senanayake College to win the Boys u-15 title. Haashid Noordeen from Lourve College won the Boys u-13 title overcoming Danuja Jayasinghe from Ananda Shashthralaya \ while Nethanya Wickramasinghe from Ladies College won the Girls u-13 title overcoming Livini Jayawardena from Visaka Vidyalaya.
Kenula Hirusara from D S Senanayake College went on to win the boys U-11 title while Thinalee Daswatta from Sirimavo Bandaranayake Vidayalaya won the Girls U-11 title. Sasruka Gamage from D S Senayake College and Sanuli Godagampala from Sumedha College – Gampaha took the Boys and Girls U-09 titles respectively.
Finals and award ceremony of the tournament was held on 24th November and the occasion was graced by Mr Mevan Ranasinghe- Senior Manager- Marketing at CDB as chief guest
