Under the program to introduce and popularize globally acclaimed sports in Sri Lanka, the official inauguration ceremony of “Jokgu”, a popular South Korean sport, was held today (24th) at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The efforts to introduce this sport to Sri Lanka, which have been systematically planned since 2025, reached a successful milestone today, marking a new chapter in Sri Lankan sporting history.

The inauguration was organized under the guidance of the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage, with the coordination of the President of the Korea-World Jokgu Federation, Mr. Hong Ki-yong, and the Sri Lankan representative of the International Jokgu Federation, Mr. Nandana Embuldeniya.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage stated:

”We have kept the doors of Sri Lanka open to any sport existing in the world. While we popularize international sports in Sri Lanka, our primary hope is to take our country’s authentic indigenous sports to the international stage. We look forward to the support of the Korean government to promote Sri Lanka’s traditional sports in Korea and thereby develop our national sports sector.”

As the next phase of this initiative, Jokgu will be expanded across the island through selected schools, universities, and various sports organizations at the district level. Furthermore, programs to provide sports equipment to selected schools will be implemented in the future to promote the sport.

Representatives of the Korean Jokgu Sports Federation, officials from the Lanka Services and Product Promotional Centre, and high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Sports participated in the event.
