Sri Lanka T20 Captain Wanindu Hasaranga’s inappropriate behaviour and poor discipline came to the fore in the local cricket discourse following the national team’s World Cup debacle last month.

Are his tattoos, ear-studs, and unconventional fashion choices appropriate for a Sri Lankan national cricket captain? This debate has sparked widespread discussion that is especially timely amidst the national team’s current challenges.

In the meantime, Hasaranga’s callous disregard towards his responsibility is hinted at in his public speeches. It seems this has also been a concern for cricket fans.

“This is not the first time in this part of the world that players emerging from humble beginnings lose their head once they become established players. They don’t know how to maintain and balance such popularity and their new, luxurious lifestyle. Vinod Kambli, I remember, faced the same predicament. The same fate has apparently befallen Hasaranga too,” a former Sri Lankan cricketer opined.

“This discrepancy might result in a player revolt within the team. A similar situation arose when Dasun Shanaka was the skipper. This leads us to suspect, quite logically, that the hierarchy of our administration and some figures in the team management want to have Hasaranga as the T20 skipper so that they can get things done according to their whims and fancies,” he added.
