Shalomi Jayakody of Taxila National College, Horana and Dilki Karunarathna of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo established two new records on the inaugural day of the Junior National Athletic Championship 2025, which initiated at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama yesterday.
Shalomi set up a new record while opposing in the Under-18 Girl’s hammer throw (3kg) event with a distance of 40.81 metres while Dilki produced a record-breaking performance of 12.68m in the Under-16 Girl’s shot put (3kg).
Shalomi done the previous hammer throw record of 36.79m set by Yuthara Jayaweera of Anula Vidyalaya, Nugegoda in 2023 while Dilki shattered her own shot put record of 11.96m set in 2024.
The second place in the hammer throw event was gained by Shahini Perera of St. Bridget’s Convent, Colombo (36.91m) and third place was won by Sewmini Perera of Vidyakara Vidyalaya, Maharagama (35.19m).
Meanwhile, the second place in the shot put event was taken by Hansali de Silva (Louvre College, Pannipitiya) with a throw 
of 11.52m.
The third place was taken by Suvindi Samarakoon (Ave Maria Convent, Negombo) with a throw of 11.24m.
Approximately 1,500 athletes from four age groups are participating in the Junior National Athletic Championship, which is conducted by Sri Lanka Athletics.
