Former Sri Lanka Cricket Chairman Pramodya Wickremesinghe is likely to return to the post, and the Sports Minister is set to appoint a new five-member national selection committee in the coming days, according to media reports.
Pramodya Wickremesinghe, who was first appointed to the post in April 2021, was removed from the post following Sri Lanka’s disappointing performance in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.
However, as Sri Lanka enters another crucial phase of international cricket, his name has resurfaced to lead the country’s selection process, according to reports.
According to a leading newspaper, Sports Minister Sunil Kumara held a special meeting with Pramodya Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka Cricket Chairman Shammi Silva and Secretary Bandula Dissanayake earlier this week.
The meeting focused on the possibility of reappointing Pramodya Wickremesinghe and the proposed composition of the new selection committee that will replace the committee headed by Upul Tharanga.
The report states that the names of Hemantha Wickremesinghe, Vinodan John, Indika de Seram and Tharanga Paranavithana were discussed as members of the new five-member committee.
Both Indika de Seram and Paranavithana served on the selection committee headed by Tharanga, whose two-year tenure ended last week.
The Sports Ministry is yet to comment officially on the matter.
