Kane Williamson has declared his retirement from T20Is, bidding adieu as the second-highest run-getter for New Zealand with 2575 runs at an average of 33, together with 18 half-centuries and a highest score of 95.
The right-handed batter made his T20I debut in 2011 and was the team’s captain in 75 games. Under his captaincy, New Zealand touched the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2016 and 2022, and was the runners-up in 2021, where Australia beaten them.
The 35-year-old stated that it was time to allow others to take over. “I loved playing T20Is for New Zealand, and I am grateful for all the memories. It is the right time for me to retire as it will give the team clarity in moving forward and prepare for the T20 World Cup,” Williamson said.
“New Zealand has talented players and they need time to get ready for the World Cup. Mitch (Mitchell Santner) is a good captain and is leading the team well. It is their time to take the team forward in this format,” he added.
Kane said that he is open to playing in ODIs and Tests, saying he will be get ready for the three-match Test series against the West Indies.
Williamson will signify different franchises in leagues around the world.
