St Joseph’s College arose victorious, crushing Kingswood College in their Dialog ‘A’ Division Schools League Rugby Tournament match at Havelock Park yesterday. Leading 24-5 at halftime, the Joes lead the game and finished with a resounding 55-5 win. St Joseph’s scored five goals and four tries to reach their half-century, while Kingswood College managed only a solitary try for their five points.
The scoring began in the 9th minute when Josephian Senthu Eran ran through tackles to score under the post after a smart pass from full back Beeshma Jayasekara, who also converted to make it 7-0. Kingswood responded in the 16th minute with Chamod Wickramasinghe scoring an unconverted try, plummeting the deficit to 5-7. However, seven minutes later, Joes winger Thevan Kithnuka stepped through tackles to score after good passes from Nethan Gunaratne and Pramod Perera. Jayasekara added the extra points, extending the lead to 12-5.
In the 34th minute, Beeshma Jayasekara passed to Thevan Kithnuka, who scored additional try under the post. Though unconverted, this try augmented the lead to 19-5. Just before halftime, big prop forward Shehath Malinda scored a brilliant try in the right corner, bringing the half time score to 24-5.
After the break, in the 45th minute, Josephian Ivano White scored their bonus point try, with Jayasekara adding the extras, making it 31-5. Kithnuka completed his hat-trick in the 58th minute, though the try was unconverted, extending the lead to 36-5.
In the 64th minute, Danister Croos scored after a forwards, rush with Ivano White adding the extra points, making it 43-5. St Joseph’s lengthy their lead further with second row Hemish Gamage scoring a try after a powerful run. White converted, reaching the 50-point mark.
Just before the final whistle, Gamage eruption through the Kingswood defence for an unconverted try, sealing a 55-5 victory for St Joseph’s. This win marked their third victory of the season.
