Havelock Sports Club has partnered with FLYHISPORTS, an Australian based business entity to develop junior rugby in Sri Lanka. This was announced at a media briefing held on Wednesday. Named as FLYHISPORTS Rugby Academy, Sri Lanka’s first internationally collaborated Rugby Academy will provide opportunities for the youth to develop their skills

The participants at the Academy will learn the technical, strategic and tactical aspects of the game to help achieve their sporting or recreational aspirations. This internationally recognised programme will also help participants to develop essential skills like leadership, teamwork, communication and resilience which are much needed today.

Speaking at the launch, the President of the Havelocks Sports Club Rajiy Perera said “As a century old club we are proud to announce that we are the first club to have this on board as an Academy. Basically our main objective is to see that we are launching our first practice session on July 6, for mostly 10 year olds. So, we want that 10 year old kid, who walks into our club next Saturday to play for Havelocks, giving a Havelocks contract in 10 years time. That’s our long term goal. That’s why we have signed the contract with FLYHISPORTS for 10 years. So that we can keep improving that individual child to become a national level player.”

The Academy is an affiliate entity of FLYHISPORTS, a Melbourne based brand that commenced its business operations in 2013, catering to the competitive sports and activewear market.

Cedric Anhtony, the co-founder of the FLYHISPORTS Rugby Academy stated “I was a part of Havelocks for many years. Even though I didn’t play rugby it was my passion. When I saw how it is happening in Sri Lanka, I saw there’ is a gap where I can give some help to set up a Rugby Academy as this is what we are planning to do. We want to impart knowledge to coaches from any club or school who are willing to learn from an international Coach which gives the exposure to the coaches and the players.”

Globally recognized Rugby Coach Kruger Roach will serve as the Head of Coaching at FLYHISPORTS Rugby Academy. The Academy is focusing on creating a world class programme to benefit every Sri Lankan. The administration is expecting around 300 students. Also they expect the participation of 30 coaches. There’s a scholarship programme to help the neighbouring schools. FLYHISPORTS will invite them to join the Academy on a scholarship basis. This programme not only focused on boys, but also focused on girls as well. The first two weeks of the programme will be focusing on all the students who are participating and grooming of the coaches. (dailynews)
