Nearly half of Sri Lanka’s national cricket squad have failed to meet minimum physical performance standards in the latest fitness assessments, raising concerns about the fitness and readiness of the country’s players.

as reported only 27 of the 46 players who underwent physical performance tests in February achieved the required minimum benchmark of 17 across five assessments.

This reveals that 19 players, or 41.3 percent, fall short of the required standard.

The statistics are worrying, and the report states that the fact that almost half of the national squad failed basic fitness benchmarks points to deep structural problems in Sri Lankan cricket’s fitness and conditioning programmes.

Sri Lanka Cricket has recently tightened fitness requirements, making it mandatory for players to pass physical performance tests to participate in overseas T20 leagues.

The move has already affected several players as the cricket body looks to implement stricter professional standards and improve overall performance.

However, some players have successfully improved their fitness levels to meet the required standards.

For example, Mahesh Teekshana, who gained 22 points after losing about five to six kilograms before joining the Pakistan Super League, has been in the news for a while now.

The cricket administration recently stated that strict fitness enforcement is necessary to raise professional standards and ensure that players are physically ready for both international cricket and franchise leagues.
