
Sri Lanka will pitch four athletes for the 19th Asian Marathon Championship 2025, which will be held on March 30 in Jiaxing, China.
The Sri Lankan contingent left for China last night.
Nearly 300 athletes from the Asian region will take part in the Men’s and Women’s competition, organised by the Asian Athletics and the Athletic Association of China.
The Sri Lankan athletes will be hopeful to astonish at this meet to qualify for the World Athletic Championship, which will be held from September 13 to 21 in Tokyo, Japan.
SLA Secretary Saman Gunawardana said the Sri Lankan Athletic Team was selected from among the marathon athletes, who excelled both locally and internationally last year, including at the National Sports Games.
T. N. Rathnapala (Air Force) and K. Shammugeshwaran (Army) will compete in the Men’s category while Wathsala Herath (Army) and Nimesha Nidarshani (Army) will participate in the Women’s category.
The Sri Lanka Team Coach cum Manager will be Sajith Jayalal.
Sarath Gamage won Sri Lanka’s solitary medal in Asian marathon history at the 2000 Asian Marathon Championships. He finished the race in 2:28.25 and won a silver medal.
