Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga, who recently won the 1996 World Cup, has come forward to support former Pakistan all-rounder Imran Khan, who has been in prison in Pakistan for more than two years.
In his statement, Arjuna Ranatunga said, “At this difficult time, I request the Pakistani authorities to treat him with humanity and respect.”
“Regardless of the circumstances, compassion is important. I plead for due consideration and justice for a man who sacrificed his life for his country,” he added.
Arjuna Ranatunga points out that “Imran Khan is not only an inspiration to millions of Pakistanis, but also someone I and many other young cricketers admired and aspired to become.”
Imran Khan, who also served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018-22, was removed from office after a series of corruption allegations against him.
He was imprisoned in 2023, and foreign reports indicate that Imran Khan’s vision in one eye is currently very poor.
Meanwhile, 13 other major cricketers from around the world, including former Australian captain Greg Chappell, former Indian cricket captains Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar, had earlier requested the Pakistani government to treat Imran humanely.
