Dinali Karunadasa of Visakha Vidyalaya took the spotlight on the fourth day of the 49th MILO-sponsored All Island Schools Aquatic Championship at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool Complex yesterday, where seven new meet records were exhausted.
Karunadasa overdrawn the Under-20 Girls 800m Freestyle meet record, clocking 10:15.93 and surpassing the previous record of 10:19.05 set by South Asian Games medalist Sandu Savindi of Visakha Vidyalaya in 2019.
Karunadasa also set a new meet record in the Under-20 Girls 200m Individual Medley, winning the silver medal with a time of 2:37.42, breaking the previous record of 2:37.94 held by Sandu Savindi.
Hiruki de Silva of Gateway College Colombo gained the gold medal in the Under-20 Girls 200m Individual Medley, setting a new meet record and erasing the previous record held by Sandu Savindi.
Binura Thalagala of Lyceum International School set a new meet record in the Under-20 Boys 200m Individual Medley, clocking 2:17.17 and outstanding the previous record of 2:17.43 set by P Arukshan of S Thomas’ College in 2019.
Jessie Seneviratne of Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya recognised a new meet record in the Under-18 Girls 50m Butterfly final, winning the gold medal with a time of 30.15, breaking her own record of 30.25 set last year.
MF Muhammed of Zahira College finalized the gold medal and set a new meet record in the Boys Under-18 100m Breaststroke, clocking 1:07.62, his personal best. He surpassed the previous record of 1:10.29 held by Chris Pavithra of St Peter’s College since 2022.
Newanjana Siriwardana of Lyceum International School Wattala made her mark in the Girls Under-20 Breaststroke final, setting a new meet record with a time of 1:20.15. She broke the previous record of 1:21.91 set by T Weerasinghe of St Bridget’s Convent back in 1994.
Chris Pavithra of St Peter’s College sustained the record-breaking trend in the Boys Under-20 100m Breaststroke, clocking 1:10.15. He erased his own previous record of 1:10.39 set last year, securing another gold medal for his school in this prestigious swimming championship.
In total, 11 new meet records have been recognised by the end of the fourth day of the six-day championship.
