In an atmosphere that was together thrilling and electric, the brother/sister school joint team from Vidyartha/ Pushpadana emerged Cup Champions with a 1-nil score, defeating Science/ Girls’ High School Mount Lavinia team, at the annual C Rugby Tag Carnival detained on 30 August at the CR&FC Grounds.

Organised by Agoal Rugby, led by renowned international rugby referee Dilroy Fernando for the ninth time, in the midst of a crowd of over 2,500 soothing their favourite teams, the combined team of Kingswood/ Girls’ High School Kandy won against Thurstan/ Devi Balika with a score of 2-1 to be named Plate Champions. 

The Wesley/ Methodist joint team was adjudged Bowl Champion beating the Dharmaraja/ Mahamaya team on a score of 1 nil. 

Sixteen teams take part in this very popular annual tournament. Vidyartha’s Hashan Perera was adjudged the Most Valuable Male Player, while Pushpadana’s Hashini Malawa Thennakoon emerged the Most Valuable Female Player.

The tournament which has turn out to be very popular in the annual rugby calendar due to schools’ rugby stars of yesteryear taking the field, kicked off at 4 p.m. with the knock-out stages of the competition being played under floodlights. 

With counterparts from sister schools joining brother school teams, the tournament gained the title of being a first in the history of Sri Lanka rugby. 

Recreating the glorious days of the past, heralding a reunion of old mates from brother and sister schools, the atmosphere at the CR&FC grounds took on the beat of a rocking carnival with a host of vendor markets, street food stalls and non-stop music by Slipping Chairs, Dreaming of Saturn, Pop Culture and Section 8 and DJs Trev D, Rob R and DJ Ace. 

Totalling to the mix of the excitement were cheerleaders and decorated tents with both the Best Tent Décor and the Best Cheerleading Squad won by D.S. Senanayake-Sirimavo Bandaranayake combined team.
