The Mahinda College is a premier Buddhist school in the southern Sri Lanka established in 1892 by Col. Henry Steel Olcott. The College is running its remarkable proud legendary history of 134 years. The College has been instrumental in education, social and sport sectors in Sri Lanka and has been a primary educational institution in Sri Lankan social fabrics.
Hindu College Jaffna is an unparallel historical educational institute in Jaffna established in 1887, five years earlier than Mahinda. Both schools have similar characters and strengths from it inception to safe guard Sinhala and Tamil languages, Hinduism and Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
Considering these deep rooted historical and cultural similarities within these schools, both schools have a vital national roll to play for enhancing the brotherhoodness between North and South.
In view of that the Mahinda Club, an affiliated old boys group of Mahinda College, in Colombo in collaborations with Mahindians in the United Arab Emirates initiated to organise an annual friendly cricket match between Mahinda College Galle and Hindu College Jaffna.
The first ever such crieckt match is due to play in Galle at Mahinda College ground on 4th of Aprill 2026. Mahinda College team captained by Arosha Udayanga and Hindu College team captained by S. Subarnan.
This friendly match is playing for the “E A Wijesooriya and Captain Somasundaram”, former two prominent Principals of both schools, memorial trophy.
Further, to pave the meaning full friendship and brotherhood with students in North and South of Sri Lanka a friendly English language debate has been organised in parralle to the crieckt match at 7.30 pm on Saturday 4th March 2026 at the historical Olcott hall of Mahinda College. The topic of the debate is “The establishment of special economic zones as a driver of growth in developing countries”.
The Mahinda College debating team represent by Jayaru Hashen (Captain), Ryan Jayasooriya, Lisaka Kenodh and Sanvidu Vonal Suriyaarachchi. The master-in-charge of the debating team is Mr. Yasas Dharshana.
The Hindu College debating team represent by G. Arwinth (Captain), B. Akhileshan, G. Varun and B. Akhileshan. The master-in-charge of the debating team is Mr. M. Senthilkumar.
All these events are jointly organized by Mahindians in United Arab Emirates and Mahinda Club in Colombo.
